It’s pleasure to have Sheffield Hallam University on board as a co-sponsor for Games Careers Week 2023.
The University, or SHU as it is known, is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse universities. It has a community of more than 30,000 students, 4,000 staff and more than 280,000 alumni around the globe.
Among the varied subjects on offer to study, SHU provides a range of courses and degrees ideal for a path into the games industry including both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
SHU Celebrates Success
Sheffield Hallam University has celebrated plenty of success for their games students over the years including very recently.
Tuesday 6th June saw the annual Game Republic Student Showcase, hosted by Bradford University. The yearly contest invites students from Universities across the Yorkshire region and beyond to submit work to be judged by game industry professionals and companies.
Each year produces a very strong field of entrants, and SHU students were successful yet again by winning prizes in four categories:
- 1st place – Game Audio Category (judged by Pitstop Productions) – Tom Lawrence (BA Games Design) – Pictured Below.
- 2nd place – Game Tech Category (judged by Red Kite Games) – Candy Kingdom Tower Defence (BSc Computer Science for Games)
- 3rd place – Games Art and Animation Category (judged by Rebellion North) – Mihai (BA Game Art)
- 3rd place – Best Team Category (Judged by Rockstar) – Deaths Rebuke
All of the games courses at SHU go from strength to strength, and their students were praised specifically, with Simon Iwaniszak from Red Kite Games commenting on the quality of entrants adding that Sheffield Hallam University entrants had highlighted “what we look for in a technical award by having programmed and designed the game to be playable on a console, in this case, PlayStation 4.”
The students were accompanied on the judging day by tutors from the Department of Computing, Luke Melville and Andy Hamilton.

Game Courses at SHU
Applications for the 2023/24 academic year are now open. There’s plenty of games related course to choose from to prepare you for a future within one of the UK’s fastest growing industries! Available course include:
Computer Games Technologies – Develop skills in building computer games using modern game development tools and practices.
Computer Science for Games – Learn how to create games and underlying game engines using C++ and other industry standard tools in this exciting and fast-moving field.
Game Art – Prepare for your creative career in the games, graphics or multimedia industry.
Game Design and Development – Study a course with a distinctive, practice-based approach to games design – gaining a diverse skill set and useful experience within the field.
Digital Media Production – Design and produce new media products in film, animation, interactive media, web, apps, VR, cross-media and games.
There are also a range of other courses that can open doors to a career in games. Relatable courses include: Digital Media, Events Management, Animation & Illustration, Marketing and more. More details can be found on the SHU website.
Games Careers Fair
Sheffield Hallam University will also be present at The National Videogame Museum’s Games Careers Fair on the 22nd and 23rd June providing advice and activities for invited schools. The fair will also be open to the public 1pm – 4pm both days. Tickets to the museum can be purchased via their website.
